To measure before you order furniture in Cyprus, measure the room first, then every doorway, hallway, staircase and lift the piece must pass through, and compare the narrowest point with the product’s dimensions. Allow a few centimetres of spare room, check the diagonal depth of sofas and wardrobes, and confirm your ceiling height for tall wardrobes.
What you need before you start
You do not need special tools. A few simple things make the job quick and accurate.
- A metal tape measure (at least 5 metres)
- A notebook or a notes app on your phone
- Masking tape or old newspaper to mark the floor
- A second person to hold the end of the tape
Write every measurement in centimetres, and always note width first, then depth, then height. This is the same order used on most product pages.
Step 1: Measure the room
Measure the full length and width of the space, wall to wall. Then measure the spots that often get forgotten.
- Window sills and radiators or air-conditioning units that stick out from the wall
- Skirting boards, which reduce the usable width slightly
- The swing of doors and balcony doors, so they can still open fully
- Sockets, switches and the position of the air-conditioner, which you may not want to block
A good rule is to leave around 80 to 90 cm for the main walking paths, and about 45 cm between a sofa and a coffee table. In a dining area, allow roughly 60 to 70 cm behind each chair so people can sit and stand comfortably.
Step 2: Measure the way into your home
Most ordering mistakes happen here. A piece can fit the room perfectly and still not fit through the front door. Measure the whole route from the street to the room, and note the narrowest point.
Doorways and hallways
Measure the clear opening of every door, not the door leaf. Take the width between the frames, and the height from floor to top of the frame. Open doors fully and check whether the hinges or handle reduce the gap.
In hallways, measure the width at the tightest point, such as a radiator, a shoe cabinet or a meter box. Look for corners too. A long item that needs to turn through 90 degrees needs much more space than its width suggests.
Stairs and landings
Measure the width of the staircase between the wall and the handrail, and check the headroom above the steps and at each turn. Landings matter as much as the stairs themselves, because that is where long pieces have to pivot. Spiral and narrow stairs are the hardest, so measure them twice.
Lifts
Lifts in apartment blocks are often compact. Measure the door opening width and height, then the inside width, depth and height of the cabin. Check whether there are any rules for moving furniture in your building, and ask your building manager if you are unsure.
Step 3: The diagonal test for sofas
A sofa is deeper and taller than most doorways are wide, so it is usually carried tilted or on its side. That is why the diagonal depth matters. It is the distance from the top front edge to the bottom back edge, and it tells you whether the sofa can be rotated through an opening.
The product page lists width, depth and height. Use the depth and the height to estimate the diagonal. As a simple guide, if both the depth and the height are larger than your narrowest doorway, the sofa will have to be tilted, and you should look closely at the corners.
Corner sofas and large armchairs follow the same logic. Measure the turning points on the route, and consider a smaller model or a modular design if your access is tight.
Step 4: Wardrobes and ceiling height
Wardrobes are tall, and many are assembled inside the room. That creates two checks.
- Ceiling height. Measure from floor to ceiling in the exact spot where the wardrobe will stand. Ceilings, beams and lowered sections are not always even.
- Tilting clearance. When a wardrobe is stood upright from the floor, its side panel swings through a diagonal. If a wardrobe is 240 cm tall and 60 cm deep, that diagonal is about 247 cm. The ceiling must be higher than this, or you will not be able to raise it.
Also check the space around it. Hinged doors need room to open, so allow the full swing in front of the wardrobe. If the room is tight, sliding doors are a practical alternative, and the wardrobe’s product page shows the exact dimensions and materials.
Step 5: Compare with the product page
Every product page on Argos The Classics lists dimensions and materials. Compare each figure with your notes, and add a margin of at least 2 to 3 cm on every side. Our size guide can help you read the measurements.
For a quick test, cut out paper or tape the footprint on the floor, then stand in the room and walk around it. This shows you straight away whether a corner sofa or a wide bed will crowd the space.

Frequently asked questions
How much space should I leave around furniture?
Aim for about 80 to 90 cm on main walking paths, 45 cm between a sofa and a coffee table, and 60 to 70 cm behind dining chairs. Add 2 to 3 cm of margin to every product dimension.
What if the furniture will not fit through my door or stairs?
Measure the narrowest point on the route before you order. If the piece is too big, choose a smaller or modular model. Contact us on WhatsApp before ordering if your access is tight, and we will help you choose.
Where do I find the dimensions of a product?
Every product page at Argos The Classics lists dimensions and materials. Compare the width, depth and height with your own notes before you add the item to your basket.
Can I return furniture if it does not fit?
You have 14 days from receiving your order to withdraw for any reason, then up to 14 more days to send items back in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is normally paid by the customer. Measuring first avoids the hassle.
